The Ultimate 10-Day East Africa Circuit: Uganda, Rwanda, and Kenya in One Trip

If you only have ten days but want the full East African story gorillas, savanna, a slice of Kenya’s Maasai Mara, and two very different capital cities- this circuit is the itinerary we build most often for first-time visitors. It uses one land border crossing and one short regional flight to keep travel days to a minimum.

Day 1: Arrive in Kampala, Uganda

Land at Entebbe International Airport, transfer to Kampala, and use your first afternoon for a Lake Victoria boat trip or a visit to the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre if your flight arrives early. This is also a good time for a shoebill side-trip to Mabamba Swamp before heading west.

Day 3: Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Ride to Bwindi. Day 4 is your gorilla trekking day; book this permit months in advance, as it anchors the whole itinerary. Spend the second night recovering at a forest-edge lodge.

Day 5: Cross into Rwanda

A scenic 3-hour drive south takes you across the Cyanika or Katuna border into Rwanda and on to Volcanoes National Park, close enough to add a second trek (golden monkeys are a lighter, still spectacular alternative to a second gorilla permit) or rest.

Day 6: Kigali

A short transfer brings you to Kigali. Spend the afternoon at the Kigali Genocide Memorial and a cooperative craft market essential context for understanding modern Rwanda.

Day 7: Fly to the Maasai Mara, Kenya

Ride from Kigali to Nairobi, then connect to the Maasai Mara. This is the one leg where riding is widely appreciated.

Day 8: Maasai Mara Game Rides

Two full days of game rides across the Mara’s open plains. If you are travelling July-September, ask us to time this leg around the Migration’s river crossings.

Day 10: Nairobi & Departure

Ride back to Nairobi for your international departure, or extend with a Nairobi city stopover.

This route works because each leg is short: Uganda-Rwanda by road, Rwanda-Kenya by air. You lose almost no time to transit.

Ways to Adapt This Circuit

Swap the Mara for Tanzania's Serengeti if travelling June-September for the main Migration herds
Add 2 days in Queen Elizabeth National Park before Bwindi for more wildlife time
Trade the Nairobi flight for an overland motorcycle leg if you want to ride rather than fly; ask us about our cross-border adventure routes
