Motorcycles for Hire in Uganda: A Rider's Guide to Touring on Two Wheels

Planning Guide • 8 min read • Updated 2026

Uganda has quietly become one of East Africa’s best adventure motorcycle touring destinations, a compact country with tarmac, red dirt and everything in between, connecting savanna parks, misty highlands and the source of the Nile within a few days ride of each other. Here is what to know about hiring a motorcycle and touring the country properly.

Guided Tour vs. Self-Drive Hire

You can hire a bike solo, but for a first visit to Uganda we strongly recommend a guided motorcycle safari. Road conditions, wildlife-crossing zones, border procedures and route knowledge all matter more here than in a country you already know; a guide with a support vehicle and mechanic removes the biggest risks while you focus on the ride.

The Bikes We Use

Our fleet is built around genuine adventure and touring machines, BMW GS-series, Yamaha Tenere, Honda Africa Twin, Kawasaki KLR and Triumph Tiger models; all fully serviced and maintained for the terrain, from tarmac highway to loose savanna track and everything between.

What Licence Do You Need?

You will need a valid motorcycle licence from your home country, and we recommend arriving with an International Driving Permit as well, it smooths over checkpoint stops and is a requirement some insurers ask for. No prior off-road experience is required for our standard routes, but tell us your experience level honestly so we can match you to the right route.

Popular Motorcycle Routes in Uganda

Uganda's appeal for riders is variety; you can ride savanna, forest, highland, and lakeside terrain without ever leaving the country.

Best Time of Year to Ride

The two dry seasons; June to September and December to February, give the firmest tracks and easiest river crossings. Riding is possible in the rainy months too, with adjusted routes; ask us for current trail conditions before you book.
