Motorcycle Safari Packing List: What to Bring on an Adventure Ride
Our motorcycle safaris cover savanna tracks, mountain switchbacks and the occasional river crossing on BMW, Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki and Triumph adventure bikes real off-tarmac riding, not a scenic cruise. Packing right makes the difference between a comfortable trip and a miserable one, so here’s exactly what to bring.
Riding Gear
- A well-fitted adventure or dual-sport helmet bring your own if you have one you trust, though we can arrange rental gear
- Riding jacket and trousers with armour, ideally with removable liners for temperature swings between highland cold and savanna heat
- Riding boots that cover the ankle, sneakers are not adequate for off-road terrain
- Riding gloves, plus a lightweight pair for hot afternoons
- A buff or neck gaiter for dust protection on dry-season tracks
Clothing for Off the Bike
Pack light, quick-drying layers rather than bulk, luggage space on the bike is limited. A warm mid-layer fleece is essential for early mornings and higher-altitude routes like the Rwenzori foothills, even though daytime temperatures on the savanna can be warm.
Documents & Money
- A valid motorcycle licence (an International Driving Permit is recommended alongside your home licence)
- Passport with your visa or East Africa Tourist Visa already arranged see our visa requirements guide
- Travel insurance that specifically covers motorcycle touring standard, travel policies often exclude it, so check this carefully
- A mix of small-denomination local currency and US dollars for incidentals along the route
Health & Comfort
- Sunscreen, lip balm and sunglasses you're exposed to sun and wind all day
- A basic first-aid kit and any personal medication
- Anti-malarial medication as advised by your travel clinic
- A reusable water bottle, we stop regularly, but staying hydrated on a bike in the heat matters more than people expect
