How Much Does a Gorilla Trekking Safari Really Cost in 2026?

Planning Guide • 8 min read • Updated 2026
The permit price is the number everyone quotes, but it’s only one line item on a gorilla trekking safari budget. Here’s a realistic breakdown of every cost category, so there are no surprises when you book.

1. The Trekking Permit

This is the single largest cost and it goes directly to conservation and park management. Uganda’s permit is the more affordable of the two trekking countries; Rwanda’s is considerably higher. Permit prices change periodically with government policy, so we always quote you the exact, currently published rate for your travel dates rather than a rough estimate — ask us and we’ll confirm within a day.

2. Accommodation Near the Park

Lodges near Bwindi and Volcanoes National Park range from simple guesthouses to five-star luxury. Budget travellers can find comfortable, clean lodges; mid-range properties add better food, hot showers and views over the forest; luxury lodges add private decks, spa services and exceptional service. Expect two nights near the park as standard, since treks depart early and briefings happen the evening before or morning of.

3. Transport

Whether you drive or fly determines a large swing in cost and time. A private 4×4 with driver-guide for the Kampala–Bwindi route costs more but includes wildlife viewing along the way and total flexibility. A scheduled or chartered flight to a nearby airstrip is faster and often similar in total cost once you factor in days saved. For Rwanda, most travellers simply arrange a private transfer from Kigali since the drive is short.

4. Park Entry, Guide Tips & Porters

Beyond the permit, budget for park entrance fees on multi-day itineraries, tips for your ranger guide and trackers (a customary and appreciated part of the experience), and a porter fee if you hire one to carry your bag and help on steep terrain — genuinely worth it and a direct income source for the local community.

5. Optional Add-Ons

A realistic full trip permit, 2 nights, accommodation, transport and guide tips typically runs from a modest budget package to several thousand dollars per person for a full luxury experience.

How to Keep Costs Down Without Cutting Corners

Travel in the shoulder season (March–May or November) when lodge rates drop but trekking conditions remain good. Choose Uganda over Rwanda if permit cost is your biggest lever. Travel in a small group and share a private vehicle. And book your permit early — last-minute permits, when available at all, rarely come with flexibility on dates.
