Best Time to Visit East Africa: A Month-by-Month Breakdown
East Africa is a year-round destination, but “best” depends on what you’re chasing; dry trails for gorilla trekking, the Great Migration in a specific location, or lower prices during the quieter months. Here’s how the region’s two rainy seasons and one migration cycle shape a smart travel calendar.
December - February: Short Dry Season
Warm, mostly dry weather across Uganda, Rwanda, Kenya and Tanzania. Excellent for gorilla trekking (drier trails), and in Tanzania this is calving season on the southern Serengeti plains, with dramatic predator action as wildebeest give birth. A popular, busier window; book lodges and permits early.
March - May: Long Rains
June - September: Long Dry Season
The classic safari season and the busiest months of the year. This is when the Great Migration typically reaches the northern Serengeti and crosses into Kenya’s Maasai Mara; the famous river crossings usually peak from July through September. Dry, dusty trails are ideal for both gorilla trekking and motorcycle safaris. Book six months or more ahead for migration season.
October - November: Short Rains
A brief, often overstated rainy period typically features shorter afternoon showers rather than the sustained rain of March and May—a genuinely good shoulder-season choice: fewer crowds, green scenery returning, and reasonable trekking conditions.
What About Motorcycle Safaris?
Our motorcycle routes run most of the year comfortably. Still, the long dry season (June to September) and short dry season (December to February) give the best riding conditions for firmer dirt tracks and lower river levels at crossings. We can still run routes in the rains with adjusted itineraries; ask us for the current trail conditions on your intended route.
